These photos were taken during a three day trip from Sorrento along the length of the Great Ocean Road to Warrnambool over the Anzac Day long weekend in 2006.

Anthony Holmes > From Sunday 23rd April 2006 until Tuesday 25th April we drove from Phillip Island down the Mornington Penninsula and caught the car ferry from Portsea to Queenscliff. From there we drove the entire length of the Great Ocean Road to Warrnambool.

This photograph is of a (hopefully disused) ocean outfall at Queenscliff.

Anthony Holmes > This is the lighthouse at Airey's Inlet, as seen from the quiet little street that leads up to it. (It's quiet because you are expected to park at the end of the street and walk to the lighthouse.

Anthony Holmes > A sunny blue sky at the Airey's Inlet lighthouse. This lighthouse is called the Split Point Lighthouse. It was built in 1891.

In case you are wondering, its whilte light can be seen for 37km, and its red light for only 30km.

Anthony Holmes > ... and when you get sun and clouds at the same time, you usually get rainbows.

Anthony Holmes > After our journey from Phillip Island, we stayed at Apollo Bay for the evening of 23rd April.

This is the Maits Rest Rainforest Walk

Anthony Holmes > Maits Rest is a temperate ranforest, with Myrtle Beeches and treeferns.

The rainforest walk is named after Maitland Bryan, the district's first forestry officer, who used to rest his horses near here during his regular patrols around the time of the first world war.

Anthony Holmes > This is the Cape Otway lighthouse. It was constructed in 1846-8, and was the second lighthouse built in Australia. For many people travelling from the UK to Australia, Cape Otway was the first land they sighted after leaving Britain, in a journey that could take five months.

The lighthouse is enormously expensive. As well as costly mirrors, lenses and lighting mechanisms, it all rotates on a pool of mecury that's worth millions of dollars. In 1962 there was an earthquake at Cape Otway (truly!), and a lot of the mercury spilled out down the steps. So, since the pool was now lower, they lightned the weight of the light by removing some of the lenses: and hence didn't have to spend millions replacing the lost mercury.
